Fleadh na Bealtaine: A brand-new festival, launched onto Galway's cultural calendar and the results speak for themselves.
Overview
Fleadh na Bealtaine
On the May Bank Holiday Weekend, Galway welcomed a brand-new celebration of Irish music and culture. Over four days, the city's streets came alive with traditional music, age-old Celtic ritual and the kind of spontaneous, joyful atmosphere Galway does best. Fleadh na Bealtaine was a festival to wander into, where the next session, story or performance was always just around the corner.
Trad Music & Dance
At the heart of it all were the live traditional sessions woven through the city. Whichever street you meandered down of an evening, you'd find the finest music spilling out from bars and pubs and onto the pavement. Galway's trad scene is renowned the world over, and Fleadh na Bealtaine was a wonderful chance to shine a light on both the talent and the venues who keep it alive night after night.
And music is nothing without dance. There was plenty of céilí and sean-nós, pop-up performances and dancing at the crossroads that stopped people in their tracks. Perfect for the little ones, the family céilís running throughout the weekend were a real way to let your hair down and soak up the atmosphere.
Celtic Traditions
May Day (the 1st of May) marks the start of the Celtic pastoral summer, so it was only fitting that Buaile na mBó opened the festival that morning — a procession through the streets of Galway led, yes, by a real-life cow. Fire ran through the celebrations too, with visually striking bonfires lighting up the city after dark.
In true Galway style, pop-up theatrical performances brought a little chaos and mischief to every corner, while the streets themselves were dressed in décor drawn from the ancient rites of Bealtaine. Visitors lingered over the street workshops — everything from basket-making to wool weaving — and pulled up a seat for the Seanchaí sessions, where old Irish fables were spun with plenty of laughs added in for good measure.
Food & Drink
For those who love food and festive feasting, it was a real treat. A host of traditional dishes were served across venues all weekend long, alongside outdoor markets brimming with food, crafts and local produce — the perfect way to spend an afternoon strolling through the city. Add in a programme of engaging demos, talks and tasting events, and there was plenty to savour across all four days.
From the first note to the final bonfire, Fleadh na Bealtaine was Galway at its most alive — and we can't wait to do it all again.
